The Alocasia Red Secret is the Red form of Alocasia cuprea. It is prized for it’s dark color and unique metallic sheen.
Despite it’s exotic appearance it is one of the more adaptable Alocasias and it is generally easy to keep this plant looking it’s best.
Light:
Alocasias generally prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch their leaves.
If you have a Red Secret or any Alocasia with red undertones, providing filtered sunlight may help enhance the color.
Temperature:
Alocasias prefer warm and humid conditions. Keep them in a room where temperatures range between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C).
Humidity:
Maintain higher humidity levels, ideally between 60-80%. You can achieve this by misting the plant, placing a tray of water nearby, or using a humidifier.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
A well-draining potting mix is crucial to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix with organic matter. A mix formulated for tropical plants or aroids is generally suitable.
Fertilization:
Feed your Alocasia with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Potting:
Repot your Alocasia when it outgrows its current pot, typically every 1-2 years. Spring is the best time for repotting.
Pruning:
Remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Alocasias can drop older leaves naturally as new ones emerge.
