The Philodendron camposportoanum is an aroid native to South America (Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela). It is sometimes known as a Velvet Shield Philodendron. These plants are rarely offered but are easy to care for and grow quickly without a great deal of fuss.
Philodendron Care Tips:
Light:
Philodendrons generally prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch their leaves. However, they can tolerate lower light conditions.
Watering:
Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out before watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage in the pot to prevent waterlogged soil.
Humidity:
Philodendrons appreciate higher humidity levels, but they can adapt to average room humidity. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby.
Temperature:
Keep the room temperature between 65-75°F (18-24°C). They can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but are sensitive to cold drafts.
Soil:
Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and a bit of orchid bark or sand works well.
Fertilizer:
During the growing season (spring and summer), use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month. Reduce or stop fertilizing during the fall and winter.
Pruning and Training:
Regularly trim and remove any yellow or damaged leaves. You can also prune to shape the plant or encourage bushier growth. Philodendrons can be trained to climb or trail by using stakes, poles, or trellises.
Repotting:
Repot your Philodendron every 1-2 years or when you notice it has outgrown its current container. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and has good drainage holes.
Pests and Diseases:
Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Treat promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil if you notice any infestations. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
